Essential Links for Bike
Racers
USA
Cycling (USAC) is the national governing body for amateur cycling, and
USCF (United States Cycling Federation) is the road biking organization within
USAC. Almost all races in Northern California are held under USCF rules, so
you'll need purchase a USCF license in order to race.
NCNCA
(Northern California & Nevada Cycling Association) is the organizing body
for amateur bicycle racing in this area, and acts as the local branch of USCF.
Their web site includes a wealth of information for Bay Area racers, including
info about how to begin racing and find a club, the complete
road racing calendar for this
district, archives of race results, and news about what's going on in local
racing. If you're a bike racer you'll definitely add this to your bookmarks.
NCNCA
Racing is a new site created in 2005 to provide more info about races
than you'll find on the NCNCA site, including racer-submitted reports and online
message boards. Also, Topica.com hosts a few
discussion
groups related to local bicycle racing. The site tells you how to subscribe
and start reading and posting messages.
Interested in some out-of-district races?
OBRA is the governing body for bicycle
racing in Oregon. This is the place to go for some great amateur stage races
including the Elkhorn Classic, the
Columbia Plateau stage race, the
Mt. Hood Cycling Classic, and
the Cascade Classic. And be sure
to make the trek sometime to Silver City, NM for the five-day
Tour of the Gila, which many think
is the best race in the country for less-than-pro racers. Closer to home
SCNCA is the Southern-CA sister to NCNCA,
and is the place to check for races south of Monterey or so.
What about track? Many people don't know there's an
outdoor velodrome near San Jose (Hellyer Park), with a very active event
calendar throughout the year. There's something for everyone, and you'll see
events with riders ranging from beginners to internationally-ranked experts.
Visit the Northern California Velodrome
Association's site for details on this incredibly fun and fast form of
bike racing.
