MEET THE SEVEN SISTERS
The
Mt. Tam Hill Climb has three distinct sections. The first
is a four-mile flat stretch of Highway 1 running alongside
Bolinas Lagoon. Usually not much happens here, but a rider
trying for the record will need teammates willing to keep
the pace very high.
The second stretch, which is
the main body of the climb, is a narrow and twisting road
running through trees, Bolinas-Fairfax Road. There are few
breaks in the climbing and several short stretches where the
grade exceeds 10%. Total elevation gain along this section
is about 1500 ft.
The final section follows an
exposed ridge, climbing gradually to Rock Spring on the stair-steps
local riders call the "Seven Sisters." You'll gain another
500 ft in elevation after the cattle grate, with the rollers
along the way adding another couple hundred feet of climbing.
The Seven Sisters are tough on fresh legs, let alone after
the long grind up BoFax.
Click through the photos below
to meet the "Seven Sisters" (well, six of them) and preview
the run-in to the finish line.
The former cattle grate -- which is now paved over -- is the end
of the climb on Bolinas-Fairfax road. After a short descent
you'll pop out of the trees and face the "Seven Sisters."
The 1st Sister comes right after you leave the woods.
The 2nd Sister is shortly after 1st.
You get a short break before the 3rd sister and can pick
up some speed on a short downhill. Coming into it with some
speed, this can go pretty quick. But the top of this one is
around the bend at the top of the hill you can see in the
photo.
The 4th hardly counts, it's a quick rise after you summit 3rd.
After a very short down-roller, you come to 5th, the longest
and steepest of all of them. This is one spot where you can
really pick up (or lose) a lot of time.
The 6th can sneak up on you, it keeps going another hundred meters or
so after you round the bend shown in the photo. Then you'll
pick up some speed on a slight descent that takes you to clearing
where hang-gliders sometimes launch.
After passing that hang-glider launch spot you'll pass
through some trees and finish off the climbing on a deceptive
little bump, which we're going to call the 7th Sister. Then
it's onto the big ring (if you aren't there already) for the
exciting downhill run-in to the finish. The finish line is
at the white metal gate at the top of the rise you can see
at the top-left of this photo.
